GOMBE STREAM NATIONAL PARK

An excited whoop erupts from deep in the forest, boosted immediately by a dozen other voices, rising in volume and tempo and pitch to a frenzied shrieking crescendo. It is the famous ‘pant-hoot’ call: a bonding ritual that allows the participants to identify each other through their individual vocal stylisations. To the human listener, walking through the ancient forests of Gombe Stream, this spine-chilling outburst is also an indicator of imminent visual contact with man’s closest genetic relative: the chimpanzee.

Gombe is the smallest of Tanzania's national parks: a fragile strip of chimpanzee habitat straddling the steep slopes and river valleys that hem in the sandy northern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Its chimpanzees – habituated to human visitors – were made famous by the pioneering work of Jane Goodall, who in 1960 founded a behavioural research program that now stands as the longest-running study of its kind in the world. The matriarch Fifi, the last surviving member of the original community, only three-years old when Goodall first set foot in Gombe, is still regularly seen by visitors.
Chimpanzees share about 98% of their genes with humans, and no scientific expertise is required to distinguish between the individual repertoires of pants, hoots and screams that define the celebrities, the powerbrokers, and the supporting characters. Perhaps you will see a flicker of understanding when you look into a chimp's eyes, assessing you in return - a look of apparent recognition across the narrowest of species barriers.

The most visible of Gombe’s other mammals are also primates. A troop of beachcomber olive baboons, under study since the 1960s, is exceptionally habituated, while red-tailed and red colobus monkeys - the latter regularly hunted by chimps – stick to the forest canopy.
The park’s 200-odd bird species range from the iconic fish eagle to the jewel-like Peter’s twinspots that hop tamely around the visitors’ centre.
After dusk, a dazzling night sky is complemented by the lanterns of hundreds of small wooden boats, bobbing on the lake like a sprawling city.----------
What to do

Tanzania Safaris

The Ngorongoro Crater is often called ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ’Natural Wonder of the World,’ a visit to the crater is a main drawcard for tourists coming to Tanzania and a definite world-class attraction. Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino returns to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist. Just outside the crater’s ridge, tall Masaai herd their cattle and goats over green pastures through the highland slopes, living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area includes its eponymous famous crater, Olduvai Gorge, and huge expanses of highland plains, scrub bush, and forests that cover approximately 8300 square kilometres. A protected area, only indigenous tribes such as the Masaai are allowed to live within its borders. Lake Ndutu and Masek, both alkaline soda lakes are home to rich game populations, as well as a series of peaks and volcanoes and make the Conservation Area a unique and beautiful landscape. Of course, the crater itself, actually a type of collapsed volcano called a caldera, is the main attraction. Accommodation is located on its ridges and after a beautiful descent down the crater rim, passing lush rain forest and thick vegetation, the flora opens to grassy plains throughout the crater floor. The game viewing is truly incredible, and the topography and views of the surrounding Crater Highlands out of this world.

With so many parks and itineraries to choose from, safaris to Tanzania are often divided into regional circuits, or groups of game parks whose geographical proximity and topographical variations make up a varied and diverse group. Some of the circuits are of course more travelled to than in others. Tanzania’s northern circuit alone easily attracts the majority of tourists. But the northern circuit’s fame and popularity means that other equally stunning but less well-known locations remain little-visited attractions whose beauty is known to only a few. The southern circuit contains the Selous Game Reserve – Africa’s largest game reserve which is larger than Denmark! Although the northern circuit is the most famous, venturing off the familiar path inevitably rewards visitors with the phenomenal scenery and wildlife experiences.
What follows is a brief write-up of the main attractions of each region in Tanzania, divided into circuits accordingly. Although the western and eastern circuits are not developed as full itineraries per se, there is still much in each region that warrants a discerning visitor’s attention. Of course, none of these circuits are a complete itinerary in itself, nor is it set in stone. Rather, they are regional suggestions for travellers wishing to explore a certain part of the country, or for return visitors to travel to some new place.

ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK

The closest national park to Arusha town – northern Tanzania’s safari capital – Arusha National Park is a multi-faceted jewel, often overlooked by safarigoers, despite offering the opportunity to explore a beguiling diversity of habitats within a few hours.
The entrance gate leads into shadowy montane forest inhabited by inquisitive blue monkeys and colourful turacos and trogons – the only place on the northern safari circuit where the acrobatic black-and-white colobus monkey is easily seen. In the midst of the forest stands the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater, whose steep, rocky cliffs enclose a wide marshy floor dotted with herds of buffalo and warthog.

Further north, rolling grassy hills enclose the tranquil beauty of the Momela Lakes, each one a different hue of green or blue. Their shallows sometimes tinged pink with thousands of flamingos, the lakes support a rich selection of resident and migrant waterfowl, and shaggy waterbucks display their large lyre-shaped horns on the watery fringes. Giraffes glide across the grassy hills, between grazing zebra herds, while pairs of wide-eyed dik-dik dart into scrubby bush like overgrown hares on spindly legs.
Although elephants are uncommon in Arusha National Park, and lions absent altogether, leopards and spotted hyenas may be seen slinking around in the early morning and late afternoon. It is also at dusk and dawn that the veil of cloud on the eastern horizon is most likely to clear, revealing the majestic snow-capped peaks of Kilimanjaro, only 50km (30 miles) distant.
But it is Kilimanjaro’s unassuming cousin, Mount Meru - the fifth highest in Africa at 4,566 metres (14,990 feet) – that dominates the park’s horizon. Its peaks and eastern footslopes protected within the national park, Meru offers unparalleled views of its famous neighbour, while also forming a rewarding hiking destination in its own right.

AMAZING SERENGETI

This vast area of land supports the greatest remaining concentration of plains game in Africa on a scale unparalleled anywhere else in the world.
The name of the area is derived from the Maasai “Siringeti” meaning endless plains. Equal in size to Northern Ireland, the park contains an estimated 3.5 million large animals, most of which take part in seasonal migration that is one of nature’s wonders.
Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park, also a world heritage site and recently proclaimed a 7th worldwide wonder, the Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle join the wildebeest’s trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle.
The Serengeti stretches over 5.700 square miles of plains, riverine bush, and acacia woodland, with savannah grassland as the dominant environment.
In the Serengeti, you will explore the Kopjes – home to lion, leopard, and cheetah – as well as follow the trail of the migrating plains game. From mid-January to mid-February the wildebeest migration is usually at its height in the Serengeti, with the wildebeest giving birth to their foals during this time.
The plains are crowded with the herds, and early morning finds many new calves tottering by their mother’s sides. Perhaps you will witness this spectacle of birth on the plains, as well as the dramas of predator and prey as they unfold in this beautiful setting.
As a result of the biodiversity and ecological significance of the area, the park has been listed by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites.
The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzania’s greatest park. Golden-maned lion prides feast on the abundance of plain grazers. Solitary leopards haunt the acacia trees lining the Seronera River, while a high density of cheetahs prowls the southeastern plains. Almost uniquely, all three African jackal species occur here, alongside the spotted hyena and a host of more elusive small predators, ranging from the insectivorous aardwolf to the beautiful serval cat.
But there is more to Serengeti than large mammals. Gaudy agama lizards and rock hyraxes scuffle around the surfaces of the park’s isolated granite koppies. A full 100 varieties of dung beetle have been recorded, as have 500-plus bird species, ranging from the outsized ostrich and bizarre secretary bird of the open grassland, to the black eagles that soar effortlessly above the Lobo Hills.
As enduring as the game-viewing is the liberating sense of space that characterises the Serengeti Plains, stretching across sunburnt savannah to a shimmering golden horizon at the end of the earth. Yet, after the rains, this golden expanse of grass is transformed into an endless green carpet flecked with wildflowers. And there are also wooded hills and towering termite mounds, rivers lined with fig trees and acacia woodland stained orange by dust

THE GREAT NGORONGORO

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) covers some 8,300 square kilometres. It boasts the finest blend of landscapes, wildlife, people and archaeological sites in Africa. It is also a pioneering experiment in multiple land use. The concept of multiple land use in conservation perspective is a deviation from a traditional approach of regarding conservation as complete absenteeism of human interference
Ngorongoro is a huge caldera formed after the collapse of volcano, 250 square kilometers and 23 kilometers wide. The crater has an average depth of 600 meters. Its spectacular setting and abundance of wildlife combine to make it a wonder of the natural world.
The crater alone has over 20,000 large animals including some of Tanzania's last remaining black rhino. Animals are free to leave or enter the crater but most of them stay because of the plentiful water and food available on the crater floor throughout the year.
The floor has a number of wetland including the Munge River, Lake Makati and Lake Magadi. The Lakes are the attractive point to the numerous flamingos, pelicans, blacksmith Plover, African Cuckoo, Red-eyed Dove and other water birds more than 300 species are recorded. Also the wetland accommodates the large number of hippos and smaller creatures such as frogs and snakes.
Other mammals include wildebeest, zebra, spotted hyena, hunting dogs, gazelles, jackals and primates like mice and grasshoppers. The open grassland covers most of the crater floor and feeds the herbivores. The crater has abundant yellow barked acacia trees to its Lerai forest making a home to Elephants, baboon, bushbucks, waterbucks and velvet monkey.

Ngorongoro being a conservation area and not a national park allows one to walk and hike along a number of trails covering many areas outside the crater area. It is not allowed to walk in the crater area. Cultural tours to the nearby Maasai village are also possible. These guided walks in the conservation area need to be booked in advance.
The main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Authority is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera, The crater, which formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself two to three million years ago, is 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and its floor covers 260 square kilometres ,Estimates of the height of the original volcano range from 4,500 to 5,800 meters (14,800 to 19,000 feet) high. The elevation of the crater floor is 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level
Land in the conservation area is multi-use and unique because it is the only conservation area in Tanzania that protects wildlife while allowing human habitation. Land use is controlled to prevent negative effects on the wildlife population. For example, cultivation is prohibited at all but subsistence levels.
The area is part of the Serengeti ecosystem and, to the northwest, adjoins the Serengeti National Park and is contiguous with the southern Serengeti plains. These plains also extend to the north into the unprotected Loliondo division and are kept open to wildlife through transhumance pastoralism practiced by the Maasai. The south and west of the area are volcanic highlands, including the famous Ngorongoro Crater and the lesser known Empakaa Crateri. The southern and eastern boundaries are approximately defined by the rim of the East African Rift wall, which also prevents animal migration in these directions.

ADVENTURE CAMPING SAFARIS

There is truly no better way to experience the magic of the bush than when you are nestled right there in it! Classic camping allows you to get close to nature at your own pace in a very personal, very classic way. You will camp in wilderness campsites with shared facilities.
Our camping safaris let you experience the East African wilderness very close to hand. Unlike the campsites in other parts of Africa, the ones in Tanzania tend not to be fenced and it is quite likely that you may find an elephant wandering between the tents or you may bump into a buffalo on your way to the shower. There is no cause for alarm and no need to fret, you just need to relax as our experienced guides will look after you and our safari cooks will treat and spoil you with their excellent culinary skills. By the time you have returned after a day's adventure on safari in Tanzania, with the sun setting over the savannah and a lion roaring in the distance, you will know that you have left your every day life far, far away.  Our tents are comfortable and clean, our guides are friendly and accommodating and our bush cooks superb! Wildlife is free to roam in and out of these camps, and often does- up close and personal! Don’t forget a flashlight!
This 2-day camping safari visits the well-known nature reserves of Lake Manyara National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Day 1 Arusha - Lake Manyara National Park
We will collect you in the morning from your hotel and take you to the Lake Manyara National Park. This park offers areas of dense woodland in which the long tailed Guenon monkeys as well as baboons, antelopes, gazelles and approximately 500 elephants live. The Manyara National Park is also known for its lions that like to lounge around in trees - this behaviour is not common among big cats and makes for quite a sight. After a picnic at midday in the park, the tour continues with more chances to observe these fantastic animals. In the afternoon, you will leave the national park and camp at a campsite for the night. Lunch; Dinner
Day 2 Lake Manyara National Park - Ngorongoro Conservation Area - Arusha
After breakfast, your safari continues with a trip to the Ngorongoro Crater. This is the world's largest caldera - a feature formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption. It is approximately 18 km in diameter and home to an estimated 25000 mammals. The caldera is truly amazing and more impressive when you have reached the crater floor and had a chance to look around you, you will realize how breathtaking it is. Here, in a relatively small area (in African terms), you find practically the complete cross section of East African wildlife. Alongside elephants, zebras, wildebeests and buffalos, you will find an array of antelopes and gazelles as well as hippopotamus, warthogs and hyenas. There is also a very good chance that you will see leopards, lions and the black rhino, which unfortunately is threatened with extinction. After lunch, there will be more time for wildlife spotting before it is time to leave the Ngorongoro Crater and return to Arusha. Breakfast; Lunch

This 3-day camping safari offers you the chance to watch a wide variety of wildlife amongst some of the most varied landscapes. Not only will you see parts of the Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks but also the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater.
Day 1 Arusha - Tarangire National Park
In the morning, you will be collected from your hotel and will be taken to Tarangire National Park. The Tangire National Park with its endless tree savannah and seasonal marshes is home to the largest elephant herds in the North of Tanzania; with over 4000 at the last count, it takes some beating. In the national park, you will also be able to watch giraffes, buffalos, lions, zebras, gnus and different types of antelopes and gazelles. Upon your arrival at the park, your driver will open the roof of the vehicle and the extensive wildlife watch can begin. After having lunch at a picnic spot, you will have more time in the afternoon to see more of this amazing and beautiful park. Late in the afternoon, you will leave Tarangire National Park and you will stay for the night in tents at a nearby campsite. Lunch; Dinner

Day 2 Tarangire National Park - Ngorongoro Conservation Area
After an early start, you will drive pass the Rift Valley (Africa's graben fault) up to the cooler regions of the crater uplands. The Ngorongoro Crater is almost 600m deep and in this massive caldera, you will find an amazing variety of animals. Alongside the "big five" (elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards and rhinoceros), you will find virtually all of the animals that can be found in the entire East African savannah. At a chosen picnic spot, you will have lunch and the rest of the afternoon will be devoted to more wildlife watching. In the afternoon, you will leave the crater and you will drive to the campsite, which is situated directly on the craters edge and offers fantastic evening views across the crater. Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 3 Ngorongoro Conservation Area - Lake Manyara National Park - Arusha
Early birds can enjoy watching the sunrise over the Ngorongoro Crater - something that should not be missed and is well worth getting up for. After breakfast, you will leave the crater highlands and continue the "Northern Circuits" tour to the next national park in Tanzania. Lake Manyara National Park is one of the smaller parks in Tanzania and covers an area from the northwestern edge of the lake and a large proportion of the lake itself. The lake is the seasonal home to thousands of flamingos, pelicans and more than one hundred other types of birds. On the partly forested edges, you will get the chance to watch the proud elephants with their impressive tusks searching for food and doing their daily business. You will also be able to see giraffes, buffaloes, gazelles, antelopes, baboons, and last but not least, the famous tree climbing lions.
